From what I’ve read/heard, a lot of the power of Pi is its extensibility but it’s a hard sell for me to try it out just because I can extend it. How is it out of the box?

You'd probably want at least some packages, like @henryqw/pi-auto-compact

The system prompt is very slim, but Pi is obviously barebones. Biggest problem I find is there's no real configuring of when to compact, compaction is going to be manual. About half the packages available are various solutions to this problem.

Out of the box it doesn't appear to support parallel tool calls, or at least the model I normally use (GLM 5.3 Flash) doesn't seem to make use of it. maybe just needs a simple note that parallel tool calls are available in the system prompt? I observe parallel tool calls with OMP. There's no MCP support either, but of course there's an extension for that as well.

I'd be careful when using different providers or your OpenAI subscription. I'm not sure if Pi includes reasoning chains in the running conversation with each API call for every provider. I'm pretty sure reasoning is kept across the session with OpenRouter, at least. I always start Pi with '--no-skills'. I find it strange how they include skills as part of the base package...

I'd be interested to know how well it works with an OpenAI or ZAI subscription.

1 more data point - it's very slow on my desktop which has relatively high performance as well. Using Brave if that matters.

Agreed. The important thing is to find something that works perfectly for you. Oftentimes I think people find their own perfect system and conflate it with being the perfect system.

Didn’t know Roc was still being worked on. I think it’s an interesting concept for a language that I personally haven’t seen elsewhere

What made you think it was no longer being worked on?

Just commenting to say I've had the same experience. Been using Ghostty since (I was aware of) its release and it has been buttery smooth ever since. I occasionally see people talking about crashing or other issues they've had with Ghostty but I've not seen anything of the sort.

Anecdote: I was trying out a new editor at some point that had just had a huge update. I installed it on NixOS and noticed the new update had not been pushed onto NixPkgs. I went through their contribution guide and found how to update the package. I opened a PR and immediately a couple previous contributors & a specific maintainer were on the PR and left me some helpful comments and questions and I got it merged a few days later.

And I was someone who hadn’t been active in NixPkgs at all. The community reviewing these small package updates are active and really care which is how the number of commits can explode

devenv is essentially a convenience wrapper around nix shell with some nice tooling

You can accomplish this with web without much issue.
