Anyway I'm not so sure "static" is a viable boundary between app and not app. A static page that does any sort of API request doesn't suddenly become an app imo.

I don't find it to be utopian, but in trying to imagine how, it occurred to me that maybe the idea that we even survive to be entangled in the wider universal future, maybe that is utopian? To matter.

I think there are a lot of paths where we just rock ourselves back to a regressed agency societal state, and just never have the capacity to have any affect on the wider universe. Which is maybe good for the universe, as we are certainly not a role-model for certain forms of balance. But maybe the balanced view doesn't seek to dominate and influence and become ubiquitous, after all

There was a guy on here the other day trying to argue that Brave New World wasn't a dystopian novel. There are some absolutely wiiild world views out there.

Pretty much everyone in Brave New World is happy.

You might not like the society they've built, but there are certainly arguments that a society where most people are happy is pretty utopian.

(It's very debatable, of course, but it's not instantly dismissable)

I think that's likely to be all the sex and drugs? Though I'm basing that on the Wikipedia plot summary. I have no interest in darkening my day by actually reading any work that can be rightly described as "dystopian".

Last I checked, restaurants actually do run on razor thin margins. A fraction of the costs is food - IIRC on average about a third. Most of it is rent (typically very high in places where you’d have foot traffic) and labor (pretty labor intensive sector for a given output).

Yeah, just doing some basic maths in my head when I'm eating out -- cost of ingredients, salaries, rent, taxes, ... -- I wonder how any restaurant can even turn a profit at all, even with meal prices as high as they are.

Except maybe for the hyped influencer places which always have a queue. But which, unfortunately, also almost always serve terrible food with terrible service (hygiene...).

You don't open a restaurant to become rich... or to have the easy life. The owner of one of my favourite "mom & pop" takeout places once told me that even though they're only open for 6 hours a day on weekdays, with all the shopping, cleaning, preparation, paperwork etc. he's still working six and a half days a week (he's the only chef).

I run some light services on my NAS cause well, in the end, the distinction in naming is arbitrary at best, it’s a computer, and I use it for computer things. In an ideal world where I can afford separate purpose-built machines for everything, I’ll have a storage-only NAS, but it’s a computer I have that also happens to have many hard drive bays. Being able to service my own machines shouldn’t be all that surprising either.

There’s some irony to security not being a priority for security cameras. Different kind of security I know, but still.

There's also some irony in people happily ignoring that so many of these products live-stream the inside view of their homes and offices to some foreign corporate cloud - and in the case of suspiciously many Chinese security cameras, a state-backed corporation's cloud. Because, wow, it really is convenient.

Which is exactly why alll my cameras live in their own VLAN with no internet access, regardless of how trustworthy the company may be. Better safe than sorry and all that.
