I don’t think it’s necessarily the use case changed but maybe the constraints. Streaming directly to Clickhouse is a great solution. Recent approaches I’ve seen though buffer data as parquet in object storage first, and read data from there. Im not sure if CH would be the preference

We used to degauss the CRTs because it looked cool and there was nothing else to do. Very adjacent to watching the defrag window maximised.

I did it in computer lab and showed others and the teacher lost it, thought we were breaking things.

This is why I prefer "gratis" vs "libre" instead of "free as in speech" vs "free as in beer". gratis/libre are clear and succinct.

But in all seriousness, "free as in freedom" seems fine to me but it is replacing the already unambiguous "free as in speech". You're still stuck with the sometimes-confusing "free as in beer" and they're still cumbersome compared to gratis/libre.

That only works if your audience knows what libre and gratis mean.

I think the free speech is equally elusive in this context.

I think we shot ourselves in the foot by calling machine learning AI for so many years and now calling LLMs AI. We have a bunch of non-technical folks in our company who are convinced if we just give them access to claude with a connection to the data that it can make all these predictions for them.

We have called lots of things AI over the years. How many things have been called AI from at least as far back as Eliza in the 1960s?
