Its like telling animals dont get domesticated, dont get exploited, dont get eaten, think about the farmer, be more like him.

Its not going to happen. For the first time in history we have tools that talk back. Adults arent mentally prepped for that. They will cling to old models of reality they know, when reality has changed. The kids on the other hand can learn and adapt better, but learning takes time and happens through trial and error.

All anyone in a position of responsibility can do, just like parents, protect the kids as much as you can as they keep falling and trust with time they will learn to adapt to the new reality.

Yes if they can prove you knew it would influence atleast a few chimps and released into the wild anyway.

The main issue here is what is getting Attention.

Whether its HN or social media or the media there is no penalty for drawing everyones attention to total hysterical bullshit. instead there is a reward for drama.

Its a convenience thing. You can run a whole lot of stuff locally from wikipedia to social media/email/video servers whatever. Most people with a full time job and 2 kids dont do it cause who has time and energy to patch and maintain the ever growing complexity of this stuff. These systems will keep growing complex. That also means more bugs. Age old tradeoff between freedom and convenience.

You can run mediawiki at home but you won't have wikipedia. You can run a video server but you won't have all the movies that Netfix has. A local model is actually the real thing.

you can have the whole wiki loaded with full search available locally. check out kiwix.

Thanks I didn't know about kiwix, but, let's consider the fact that a wiki, or netflix movies are cheap or free, while AI is actually quite expensive at least for now, and i'm not sure if it's because of real costs or to justify the valuation.

So there is a bigger incentive to run locally something that's gonna get you $20 or $100 worth of bills to OpenAI than to mirror something that is actually free.

Example: In the past there was a whole market for sound cards, if you wanted your computer to have any "multimedia" capabilities you needed to get a sound blaster but now everybody assumes a computer will produce sound, and it's basically for free as all chips have it. Now sound interfaces are still a thing but only for audiophiles who are esoteric enough like me to believe that it's worth to have that extra hi-fi quality.

What I think it could happen, is that eventually AI will be part of all the chips, just like soundcards. And there will be people who will buy specialized AI from companies that perhaps are not OpenAI or Anthropic but second-generation sleepers who watched the carnage in the market and decided to enter when it was reasonable.

This could be Apple, or Nvidia or something new. They're just waiting for the others to do the research and introduce the taste for it to the masses, just like sound blaster made us fall in love with high fidelity sound in our computers.

GenAI is just one more source of turbulence.

Hollywood was getting rocked way before AI showed up. There are many different forces rocking the boat.

When Supply of content greatly exceeds Demand what happens to its value? Human Attention is finite but amount of entertainment content availble has exploded massively since the internet arrived. The UN report on the Attention Economy say people end up consuming less than 1% of all content produced.

So how is it sustaining itself? Usual ways Outsourcing (DNEG the largest VFX firm is run by indians) Big Tech subsidizing things to push their own agenda/tie people to their platforms - this is why everyone from Apple,Amazon,Google, Netflix, Larry Ellison started funding movies. Its about empire defense.

Media options too have exploded Gaming, Streaming, Sports, Cable, Music, Social Media, Reality TV are all fishing in the same finite non growing pool of attention.

Its cheaper to produce/distribute media than ever before so there are creatives and kids all over the world now producing media in their own vernacular, eating into the eyeballs the monopoly hollywood enjoyed for a long time due to high barrier to entry.

Then there is info overload, audience fatigue, metrics platforms share publicly give a warped view of whats really going on, money laundering, global financial logic having a huge influence on how things work. All this was going on before AI arrived, and AI will add another layer to the complexity stack.

Some people want a simple story about a very complex time. That need just creates misunderstandings and confusion. It misguides people about what problems need solving. The biggest problem is human attention is being over fished.
