Consoles don't have true 'generational leaps' any more either, the huge leaps forward in tech used to drive excitement/sales.

Exactly. Indie development is where it's at. The best game I played in the last five years was probably A Short Hike. It moved me and inspired me to get back into game dev and it was made by one person
